Welcome to Japan SB Database Website

This site aims to introduce Japanese Sustainable Building (SB) information on architectural projects, building techniques, policy frameworks and others. The Building List on the right leads you to the information about several best practices of SB projects in Japan, including its Features, CASBEE score and Technical Details.
As it is originally for an activity of the Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (APP), Buildings and Appliances Task Force (BATF), this site sometimes focuses on CO2 emission reduction rather than covering the variety of topics around the Sustainable Building.
The SB information of other APP countries is available at the APP Sustainable Buildings Database Portal. So far the databases of Australia, China, India, and the United States are linked. Those of Canada and Korea are planned to be linked when they are ready.

What is a "Sustainable Building"?

According to the definition by the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ), which is the most frequently referred in Japan, “A sustainable building is one which is designed: [1] to save energy and resources, recycle materials and minimize the emission of toxic substances throughout its life cycle, [2] to harmonize with the local climate, traditions, culture and the surrounding environment, and [3] to be able to sustain and improve the quality of human life while maintaining the capacity of the ecosystem at the local and global levels.” (AIJ, 2005, “Architecture for a Sustainable Future”, Tokyo: IBEC)

What is CASBEE?

CASBEE is a labeling tool based on the Building Environmental Efficiency (BEE). Please click here for the further and the latest information on CASBEE.
