Project Outline

"Daito Bunka University Itabashi Campus" is a redevelopment plan designed to upgrade buildings on a crowded urban campus. The plan was that the No. 1 and No. 2 blocks, which locate on the south side and along the Metropolitan Expressway, would remain, as would the senior high school adjacent to the west. The aging library, classroom building and gymnasium were demolished, a central block with a new library was planned in the middle of the campus, and a No. 3 block (classroom and research lab building) along with a new gymnasium and welfare section block was built to the north. With this, we have completed an urban campus that will be always full of the energetic voices of students, with two green squares named “Forest of Interaction" and “Forest of Contemplation" surrounded by the various buildings.
A university campus is an important place for education and research that nurture human resources. It is also expected to be a place like a "town" with various daily activities, sports, club activities and others. Our aim here was to create a campus that carries a message for the future while retaining the image of the old campus; to create an energy-saving, resource-saving campus that would remain in the memories of those who used it, be loved by them and be continuously used by them. The most important function of a university campus is to bring people together. Based on an overarching concept of "creating an urban campus that is both human-friendly and kind to the environment", a semi-external space called the "Spine Space" provides a horizontal link between a cluster of low- and medium-level buildings surrounding the squares. This creates a relationship in which activities in the surrounding buildings and squares are mutually visible to each other.
